The 2nd “Design Young” Shanghai Youth Creativity Contest was endorsed by Shanghai Municipal Youth League Committee and Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, sponsored by Youth Newspaper, Shanghai Young Creative Talents Association, and Shanghai Promotion Center for City of Design, organized by Life Weekly. In the same time, it got DoBe as the chief sponsor. Under the theme “Roam the City by Design”, the contest formally started on Sept. 26, 2017. It attracted students from 14 design schools and many young professional designers. With their passion for design and love for Shanghai, they conveyed their ideals of "urban mobility" through a variety of creative works.

The contest was open to entries for 2 months. It received 110 entries, including 5 categories, i.e. industrial design, environmental art design, APP software design, graphic design and fashion design. The contest had 2 rounds, i.e. the preliminary assessment and final assessment. In the end, led by Lou Yongqi, the contest’s chief advisor and Shanghai Young Creative Talents Association’s Chairman, Ding Wei, He Jiong, He Genxiang, Lu Ming and Budiman (Singaporean) conducted a strict assessment, selected 9 outstanding works in the student unit and 4 outstanding works in the professional unit.

All the entries stick closely to the theme, focus on "urban mobility”, stay close to the real urban life, think about the current situation and improvement of urban mobility from different angles in different ways. A praiseworthy fact is that the winners have also paid attention to senior citizens, babies, and the blind and other vulnerable groups. In design, they showed the precious humanistic spirit. For example, the work that won the first prize, the "City Bubble" bus stop designed by Xu Kaiyan, Zhou Tianmei and Liu Yindan from Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology, turns bus stops into green environment-friendly urban stops, to purify the environment continuously like bubble spirits in the city, which fully reflects the concept of "green mobility". In addition, the APP “To Toilets" designed by Qiu Tian, Xin Kuo and Li Qianwei from Shanghai Jiaotong University can intelligently present the optimal routes to metro toilets for passengers. This design concept is new, feasible and closely connected with people's real needs. Another example is Willgo, the scooter for senior citizens, designed by Xiong Qingdi and Miao Jun from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, which gives full consideration to all sorts of mobility problems faced by senior citizens. It’s of great significance to promoting the life quality of Chinese senior citizens. The system of sidewalks for the blind YOUR EYE, designed by Gao Tanhao, Jiang Yunyi, Wang Meng from Donghua University, gives consideration to the mobility of the blind, turns the public system of sidewalks for the blind into a personal product, making it humanized.

"Many of today's winners are imaginative. Some are small design cases, but they can make our city warmer and more convenient for everyone." Having watched so many excellent design works, Ding Bo, Deputy Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Youth League Committee said, "We must let young people’s design ideas take root in our small platform, and then bloom on a bigger stage."

The winning designers will receive not only their prizes, but also attention from enterprises and Shanghai Young Creative Talents Association, which will help them turn their ideas into reality. At the same time, the works will also be exhibited at Xuhui Art Museum. These smart and creative designs will guide more citizens to pay attention to our problems in "urban mobility".

Every step of a city's development needs the full devotion of the city’s outstanding young people. The 2nd “Design Young” Shanghai Youth Creativity Contest provided young people who have responsibility, passion, wisdom, creativity with a platform to show themselves and participate in urban construction. It triggered young designers’ enthusiasm for creation and sense of social responsibility. Under the influence of this contest, more young people in Shanghai have begun to pay attention to urban mobility, the city’s development and future. It has produced a good social effect. We believe young people’s thinking and efforts will help Shanghai realize the vision of "an important city for modern cultural and creative industries in the next 5 years, a basic cultural and creative industry center with international influence in 2030, a complete cultural and creative industry center with international influence in 2035”

DoBe Group’s President Jia Bo remarked that we are willing to help young people express their yearnings for their future life by means of design. All the designs are based on the future and benefit the present. We hope that our winning works will blend into our life and become reality in the future. DoBe will assume the mission with Youth Newspaper. It’s meaningful to support Shanghai's creative urban development. As partners, it is our pleasure to contribute our strength and support the development of creative design in Shanghai together.
